Crocus: Flower Bulb of the Year 2026

Early colour, little effort and an unmistakable sense of spring: the crocus has been named Flower bulb of the year 2026. With its fresh blooms, this early spring flower is an essential start to the garden season.

The power of early flowering bulbs

When winter has only just passed, the need for colour and life is strong. This is exactly when the crocus appears. Sometimes as early as February, the first flowers emerge, bravely rising above the ground. Purple, yellow, white or striped: crocuses instantly bring atmosphere to the garden, on the balcony or even in the lawn. This early character is what makes the crocus so special. While many plants are still dormant, these spring flowering bulbs immediately add an optimistic note. It is no coincidence that the crocus has been chosen as Flower bulb of the year 2026.

Why the crocus?

The crocus is compact, resilient and versatile. It feels at home in borders, pots, planters and among the grass. Thanks to its modest size, it fits into almost any outdoor space, large or small. In addition, the crocus is ideal for planting in larger numbers. The more bulbs you plant, the greater the effect. Another advantage: crocuses require very little maintenance. Once planted, they will perform for years. Many varieties naturalise easily and return on their own every spring, often with even more flowers than the year before.

Early flowering, a valuable moment

Because crocuses flower so early, they are among the first bulbs to bring colour to the garden at the start of spring. At this time of year, flowering plants are still scarce. By planting crocuses in the garden, in pots or in the lawn, you contribute to a lively spring scene, where insects also begin to reappear as temperatures rise.

How to use crocuses in the garden and in pots

Crocuses are true mood enhancers and can be used in various ways:

  • In the lawn
Plant crocus bulbs in groups scattered across the grass. Only mow once the foliage has died back, so the bulb can store enough energy for the following year.
  • In borders
Combine crocuses with other spring bulbs such as snowdrops or grape hyacinths for a layered effect. They create a natural transition to later flowering plants.
  • In pots and containers
Crocuses also perform excellently on balconies or terraces. Choose pots with good drainage and place them in a bright location.

Planting: simple and quick

Planting crocus bulbs is easy and can be done in autumn, usually from September to November. Choose a spot in sun or light shade and ensure well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of about twice the height of the bulb, with the pointed end facing upwards. After that, it is mainly a matter of waiting. Those who plan wisely will be rewarded in early spring with a colourful carpet of flowers, exactly when the garden needs it most.

A small bulb with great impact

The crocus proves that a lot can be achieved with very little effort. Whether you have a large garden or just a balcony, this flower bulb fits everywhere and provides a cheerful start to the season year after year. By choosing spring flowering bulbs such as the crocus now, you lay the foundation for a garden that comes to life early.
