A colourful oasis with trendy dahlias

Dahlias are arguably the superstars of any garden. With their vibrant colours and variety in shapes, they bring colour and a cheerful note. Whether you have a large garden or a small patio, dahlias are always easy and versatile. Plant them on a beautiful spring day so you can enjoy a colourful oasis of trendy dahlias all summer long.

Choosing your dahlias

Choose dahlia varieties that match your style and space. Dahlias come in many shapes and colours, from elegant and sophisticated to bold and colourful. Popular varieties include ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ with its bright red flowers and ‘Café au Lait’ with its subtle, creamy hues, but there are many more possibilities! If your space is limited, opt for low-growing dahlias; they are perfect to use in pots on a terrace or balcony.

Planting dahlias

Plant your dahlia bulbs in spring, once the risk of frost has passed. Pick a sunny spot in your garden or on your balcony and make sure the soil is well-drained. If you plant your bulbs in pots, you can use a mixture of potting soil and compost. Plant the bulbs about 10 centimetres deep and, when planting them in the open ground, at a distance of 30-40 centimetres apart, so they have enough space to grow. If you are using a pot, it is fine to plant the bulbs closer together.

Caring for dahlias

Water them regularly, but make sure the soil does not get too wet. If you really want to spoil your dahlias, fertilise them every few weeks with fertiliser, to stimulate lush growth. Remove wilted flowers to encourage new blooms and keep an eye on the plants for snails.

Enjoying your dahlias

If you care for them properly, dahlias will flower in full splendour throughout the season. Pick a few flowers now and then to put in a vase or simply enjoy the lush blooms in your garden or on your patio. The beauty of dahlias is that they come in endlessly varying colours and shapes, making your garden look vibrant and colourful from summer to autumn.
