Perhaps you don’t have a garden. Create a mini garden with flower bulbs. You will be able to enjoy a nice atmosphere and colour in spring.
Perfect spot
You don’t need a garden to be able to enjoy beautiful flowers. Flower bulbs will grow perfectly in pots and planters on your balcony. Plant them in autumn, with some pansies on top if you like. As soon as spring arrives, the first green tips will appear and the stunning metamorphosis from bulb to flower begins. Isn’t it wonderful to watch nature do its thing!
The right varieties
All bulbs grow well in pots and planters, so you can go all out! Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, blue grapes and crocuses are real harbingers of spring. That being said, lesser-known varieties like star hyacinth, glory-of-the-snow or striped squill are also beautiful. If your balcony faces the wind, choose lower varieties so that they stay neatly upright when the wind blows hard.
In layers
If you want to extend the flowering period of the bulbs on your balcony, you can plant them in layers, also known as lasagne planting. This is a way of planting bulbs in layers, much like a lasagne dish. Since the flower bulbs are planted in layers, the earliest to bloom, such as crocuses, will emerge first. These will then be followed by the flower bulbs that will flower later.
Useful tips
Make sure there are holes in the bottom of the pot to allow excess water to drain away. Put shards in the bottom of the pot to encourage water drainage and keep the hole in the bottom from clogging. Plant the bulbs close together for a wow effect, but don’t let them touch. During frost, make sure there is enough moisture in the soil; this will prevent the bulbs from freezing dry.
